Letter from Dean Lyn

The Georgia State University School of Public Health was founded a decade ago to bring the expertise of faculty and the energy of students to bear on some of the most pressing and persistent issues impacting the health of populations, particularly those who traditionally have been underserved.
As you’ll see in these pages, the School of Public Health has an incredible record of preparing students to make a difference in the health of local and global communities. Our research and community engagement brings evidence-based solutions to people in metro Atlanta and worldwide.
I’m grateful to the faculty, staff and academic leaders whose vision and dedication have created a thriving School of Public Health in a city widely recognized as a global hub of public health expertise. Our alumni, now more than 2,000 strong, bring distinction to our school through their impactful work in state and federal agencies, community and international non-profits, and the private sector. Alumni and other donors are opening doors of opportunity for students through their generous support of scholarships and helping us attract and retain world-class faculty.
A Timeline of Impact & Engagement
To address the growing demand for a well-educated public health workforce and to capitalize on Atlanta’s status as a global hub of public health expertise, Georgia State University launched a graduate certificate in public health program in 2002. The Institute of Public Health, as it was then known, was envisioned as a partnership between public health researchers, practitioners and the Atlanta community. This ethos of collaboration and connection remains to this day.
The institute added new students and faculty through a Master of Public Health program and then a Ph.D. program before becoming a standalone School of Public Health in 2013. The change reflected the growing stature of Georgia State’s public health faculty and programs, and it followed the acceptance of the institute’s application to transition to a school by the Council on Education for Public Health, the national accrediting body for schools and programs of public health.
Today, the Georgia State School of Public Health offers a broad range CEPH-accredited degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Among public institutions, the school is now ranked among the nation’s top 25 public health programs. Inclusive excellence is a hallmark of the School of Public Health, which is nationally recognized as one of the most diverse schools of its kind.
