John A. Steward, MPH, joined the faculty of the Institute of Public Health in 2006. Mr. Steward is a retired Captain in the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service, having served 30 years. Mr. Steward was assigned to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry for the past 20 years as an environmental health scientist and program manager in injury prevention, chronic disease prevention, toxic substances exposures in communities, and public health administration. His public health experience also includes 10 years of working with the Indian Health Service on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona and in California. His last CDC assignment involved developing the Healthy Communities health protection goal plan, a CDC-wide strategic initiative to improve public health efforts and to eliminate health disparities. Mr. Steward served as an adjunct instructor in the Commissioned Officers Training Academy of the USPHS. Mr. Steward also served as a senior advisor to the Surgeon General for junior officer career development concerns.
At GSU, Mr. Steward manages the Partnership for Urban Health Research, a university-wide initiative to improve the health status of people in urban settings. He works with research faculty to foster interdisciplinary research in injury and violence prevention, chronic disease including asthma, alcohol and drug abuse, and infectious diseases in multiple settings. He teaches an introductory public health course for undergraduates (PERS 2002, fall semester) and is currently the acting coordinator for the masters of public health practicum course.
