Dr. Derek Shendell is an environmental public health scientist with work and research experiences in various settings at the local, regional (counties), state and federal level (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory). His primary research interest are in residential and school environments indoors and outdoors, namely air and environmental quality and linkages to/reasons for student attendance, tardiness and leaving early; childhood asthma; urban environment characterization; ventilation and energy efficiency including noise (loudness, frequency/annoyance); and, drinking water quality and health.

Just prior to joining GSU IPH, Dr. Shendell worked for the Community Action to Fight Asthma Initiative (CAFA-I). He was Director of State Projects and Statewide Sciences Consultant for CAFA-II (7/1/05- 12/31/05); Interim Executive Director of CAFA-I (11/1/04-6/30/05), including being the direct TA provider to eight local asthma coalitions in the San Joaquin Valley; and, Director of Environmental Health Sciences and Education for the CAFA-I State Office (2/23-10/31/04).

Dr. Shendell was Secretary of the American Public Health Association's (APHA's) Environment section (2004 and 2005) and remain Communications Chair and Editor of their e-newsletter (2005 and 2006). He was recently elected to be one of the APHA's Governing Council representatives for the Environment Section (2006 and 2007). He previously served the International Society of Exposure Analysis as Student Councilor, and participated on several California Interagency Working Groups. In Georgia, he is already involved with several local health departments for school-based projects, and the Georgia Asthma Advisory Council.
