Masters Program

The objectives of the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program are to:

  • Prepare students to use multi-disciplinary skills to address contemporary public health problems.
  • Prepare students for positions of senior responsibility in public health practice, research, and training, particularly at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Train students to understand an “ecological approach” to public health, with emphasis on the linkages and relationships among the multiple determinants of health.
  • Train students to excel in reducing public health disparities, particularly in urban communities.
  • Advance public health sciences and our understanding of the causes and prevention of disease.

The Master of Public Health degree program requires completion of 42 credit hours, of which 18 credit hours are for core courses required for accreditation, 9 credit hours are for electives within the specialty tracks, 6 credit hours are for other public health electives, and 6 credit hours are for completion of a required practicum, internship, or field placement.  A thesis or special project (3 credit hours) is required.

Students are required to specialize in one of three tracks:

  1. Prevention Sciences
  2. Health Promotion and Behavior
  3. Health Management and Policy

The Master of Public Health degree program consists of both Public Health courses and a complementary selection of courses taught by a wide array of Georgia State University faculty. The program is taught on-site in Georgia State University classrooms where instructors utilize the most current educational technologies as well as use distance learning technologies such as WebCT Vista to compliment the in-class experience.
