Dr. Rodney Lyn is an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Public Health at Georgia State University. He teaches courses in the Health Policy and Administration track of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program. Dr. Lyn’s research is focused on childhood obesity prevention, school and community health, and reduction of health disparities. He has special interest in the role of public policy in shaping environments, influencing behaviors and public health.
Dr. Lyn directs the Policy Leadership for Active Youth (PLAY) initiative, a collaborative effort between the state’s research universities and statewide partners to address childhood obesity by connecting an emerging evidence-base to practice and policy. Over the past 5 years, Dr. Lyn has worked closely with state agencies, professional associations, not for profit organizations, and the philanthropic community to prevent childhood obesity. He recently completed an evaluation of Georgia school districts’ wellness policies, which were mandated by the federal government through the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. Dr. Lyn has an adept understanding of childhood obesity and the policies that have promise for mitigating its impact.
In addition to his interest in obesity prevention, Dr. Lyn works closely with the health care community to promote investment in community health. He is currently principal investigator for a project with Piedmont Hospital (Atlanta, GA) that connects organizational investments, through community benefit activities, to community needs, assets, safety net providers, and health promotion activities. The project may serve as a model for partnership between the public health and clinical care communities.
Prior to joining the faculty at Georgia State University, Dr. Lyn served as a Research Associate in the Institute of Public Health. While serving in positions at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health and Georgia State University’s Department of Nutrition he conducted school and community-based obesity prevention research. His educational background includes a dual-major Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Physical Education and a Master’s degree in Exercise Science. Dr. Lyn earned his PhD at Georgia State University.
